RACE EXAMPLE:
How does the father's attitude toward Mr. Bellavista change from the beginning of the story to the end?
The father's attitude changes from the beginning to the end. In the beginning, the father thought that the old man was strange. In the text is says on page 4, "my father and his friends made fun of him sometimes and called him Old Spaghetti Man." This shows that they didn't understand Mr. Bellavista and therefore felt that he was strange. In the end, the father felt that the old man was just misunderstood. After they picked the crops, the author states, "my father helped make spaghetti sauce" (pg 10). The author goes on to state that "they all ate dinner together in Mr. Bellavista's apartment and listened to opera on the radio" (pg 10). As you can see, Mr. Bellavista was misunderstood at the beginning because in the end, they became friends. Additionally, the father then continued on the tradition of planting a garden, so this shows that he finally understood why Mr. Bellavista planted one each summer.
